Frequently Asked Questions About Flax

We have designed this page to help with frequent questions we receive from customers about Omega Gold Flaxseed.

1.  How is flaxseed best added to the diet?

Flaxseed can be added as whole seed  or ground.  Ground flaxseed provides more nutritional benefit than does whole flax seed.  The seed coat of flax is hard.  Grinding the seed aids in breaking the seed coat and therefore aides in digestion.  Whole flaxseed remain unbroken when passing through the body thus reducing the nutritional benefits.

2.  How can flaxseed be ground?

Flaxseed is easy to grind and likely, you have the right tool in your own kitchen.  Flaxseed can be ground with a food processor or coffee grinder.  The seed can be course or fine ground.  Recipes usually call for fine ground seed.  Once the seed is ground, the seed can be mixed with juice such as orange juice.

3.  Can I eat flax while I am taking a prescription medication?

If you are taking any medications or are on a special diet, visit with your physician about adding flax to your diet.

4.  What are the storage requirements of flaxseed?

The hard seed coat of flax helps protect the seed against environmental factors such as heat and humidity.  Whole flaxseed can be stored in clean, dry container for up to a year.

Once the flaxseed has been ground and the hard seed coat has been broken, a greater risk exists in developing an ‘off-flavor or taste’.  Flax is best prepared daily to ensure freshness.  After all, there are no preservatives in this product.  The ground flaxseed can be refrigerated in an opaque container.  Ground flaxseed stored in this method for about 1 week.

5.  How many calories are in flaxseed?

100 grams of flaxseed has approximately 450 calories.
